This site is located in Lima, Peru on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The program includes apartments for research fellows, exhibtion spaces, a theatre, and an archive as well as offices and other administrative spaces. The programs are divided and grouped into three distinct masses that are terraced along the cliff depending on access. All three of the masses are connected at their points of rotation, forming outdoor spaces in between. They are also connected by a series of stairs that begin at the top of the cliff and end at the very bottom. The stairs are covered to provide shade from the intense Peruvian sun which also gives the circulation path its own visible mass. This provides people with the opportunity to traverse the cliff and also to explore the public areas within the building along the way. The design for this building was highly motivated by the site conditions. A site like this one is rare and it was because of this it was important to preserve the characteristics of the cliff while also making it a more inhabitable feature of the city. The cliff is often a barrier between the urban areas of Lima and the coastline. By transforming it into a more experiential condition, the beach and the city are no longer so isolated from one other.
