Live - Work Community
Live-Work Community
Midland, Texas often experiences what is commonly known as a “boom” which leads to a deficiency in adequate housing. This project focused on creating a live - work community for Midland that can begin to mitigate that problem. The four acre site was divided amongst studio members. This particular site is primarily residential and includes two public spaces which, in coordination with the rest of the site are programmed as an elementary school and a gas station. The bulk of the investigation involved designing the residential areas, which includes duplexes and single family homes. The primary interest lies in the arrangement of the residential buildings, and not necessarily within the buildings themselves. I was curious about the legal boundaries of a piece of land and how someone’s perception of these lines can be manipulated. I maintained a typical division of land but, in stead of simply placing the houses in the middle of the plots, I placed them in alternating corners. This broke up the usual perception of property lines as thickened separations between buildings and created more varieties of negative space. The placement of the houses gave definition to the property lines that they had not previously had, and simultaneously created more interesting spaces for interaction between residences.
